setting intentions: a yogic approach to the new year

The start of a new year often arrives with a lot of noise – resolutions to overhaul ourselves, expectations to do more, be more, achieve more. In yoga, we’re offered a different way.

Rather than setting resolutions, yoga invites us to set intentions. An intention is not something to fix or force. It’s a quiet direction, a way of listening inwards and asking: What do I need more of this year?

Resolutions tend to focus on outcomes. They’re often rigid, external, and easy to abandon when life inevitably gets busy. Intentions, on the other hand, are:

  • Gentle rather than demanding
  • Rooted in awareness, not pressure
  • Flexible and supportive of real life

An intention might be as simple as finding steadiness, creating space, or moving with kindness. There’s no pass or fail – just a practice of returning.

how yoga helps us set intentions

Yoga gives us the space to pause. Through movement, breath, and stillness, we begin to notice what’s actually going on beneath the surface.

On the mat, intentions are often set at the beginning of a practice – not as something to achieve, but as something to carry. They can guide how we move, how we breathe, and how we respond when things feel challenging.

Over time, that awareness naturally extends beyond the mat and into daily life.

If you’re returning to practice after the festive break – or starting again after some time away – January doesn’t need to be about pushing forward.

At The Good Rooms, we see the New Year as an opportunity to:

  • Reconnect with your body
  • Move at a pace that feels supportive
  • Find grounding during the winter months

Your intention doesn’t need to be clear straight away. Sometimes simply showing up, breathing, and moving is enough.

An intention can change from day to day, or stay with you for months. You might revisit it at the start of a class, during savasana, or even while sitting with a cup of tea at home.

There’s no rush. No expectation. Just the practice of noticing, and choosing to meet yourself where you are.

As we move into the year ahead, we invite you to step onto the mat with curiosity, kindness, and an openness to whatever unfolds.

We’re glad to welcome you back.
