creating space for good: beyond mental health awareness week
11–17 May is Mental Health Awareness Week, a moment to reflect on how we care for ourselves and each other. This year’s theme of “action” is a timely reminder that mental well-being isn’t only about managing stress when it shows up – it’s also shaped by the everyday habits, environments, and small moments that help us feel more grounded, connected, and supported; encouraging us to takes simple acts that may help lift our mood and improve our ability to cope with life.
This year’s theme also invites us to consider reflecting on how we care for each other – making time for friends, approaching people with kindness and understanding, and being part of something bigger than ourselves.
The Mental Health Foundation has compiled a list of top ten actions it recommends to support good mental health and starting off by finding a couple that work for you. Two of these are “move regularly'”and “try mindfulness.“
moving regularly
“Being active can boost your mood and raise your self-esteem. It’s also an effective stress management technique. Whether you go for a walk, do some yoga, or vigorously clean the kitchen, it all counts.”
We often think of movement as something we do purely for fitness, rather than for overall wellness. But the mind and body are deeply connected, constantly influencing and responding to one another. How we move affects how we feel, just as how we feel affects the way we move through the world.
A diverse range of yoga and Pilates classes on offer at the studio are designed to support every level and goal, including sessions that incorporate weights for added strength and challenge. All classes take place in a heated room to enhance mobility, focus, and overall experience. With over forty sessions available each week, there’s plenty of opportunity to move, train, and reconnect with your body and mind in a way that fits your routine.
trying mindfulness
“Being fully aware in the present moment can positively change the way you feel about life and how you approach challenges. Aim to notice the colour of the sky, the sound of leaves, or the feeling of your feet on the ground.”
Mindfulness helps us become aware of the countless distractions that pull us away from the present moment, revealing how easily we avoid discomfort and disconnect from ourselves. It can be deeply confronting, because mindfulness acts like a mirror – reflecting back our habits, thoughts, emotions, and patterns with honesty and clarity, including the parts of ourselves we may not always want to face.
Pilates creates a moving meditation by combining breath, precision, alignment, and controlled movement to keep you fully present in the moment. Each exercise is designed with intention and safety in mind, helping you move efficiently while getting the most out of every movement. The added intensity of the heat deepens that mind-body connection, sharpening focus and drawing your awareness back to the present.
Similarly, yoga offers a space to reconnect with yourself through mindful movement, breath, and presence. By linking each posture with intentional breathing, yoga helps quiet the mind, improve body awareness, and bring you fully into the present moment. The practice encourages strength, balance, flexibility, and inner calm, while the added warmth of the room can deepen focus, enhance circulation, and create a grounding mind-body experience.
for all of us
Mental Health Awareness Week encourages us to check in with ourselves and with the people around us, and it reminds us that our mental wellness deserves the same attention and care as our physical health.
Even the smallest changes can help support a calmer, healthier mind:
- Taking regular breaks from screens
- Spending time outdoors
- Prioritising sleep and rest
- Practising mindfulness or meditation
- Making time for meaningful conversation
- Creating quiet moments in busy days.
If you are looking for a calm and restorative environment – and community, to support your well-being, we offer a welcoming space created entirely around relaxation, mindfulness, and self-care. A chance to slow-down and reconnect with your breath – and ultimately, yourself.
